Kevin Kaufman
Composer
Kevin Kaufman began his music career as a pop/R&B songwriter. His first recorded song was a Record World "Pick hit of the Week" on Roadshow Records (RCA). He worked as an arranger, accompanist, and music director for recording artists and nightclub acts including William Hart of the Delfonics.
In addition to eight productions of The Little Witch of Wichita, Mr. Kaufman is also a writer, composer and producer of American Twistory, a musical revue twisting historical icons into hysterical parodies, most recently produced at the Comcast Cabaret Theatre in Boston, MA (2007), and at the Cinegrill in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in 1998. His children's musical, Jody’s Wish ("Julia's Traum") was produced at Klecks Jugendtheater, Berlin, Germany.
Kaufman and producing partner Gail Stayden are developing the musical "Now, Voyager" for Broadway, adapted from the same source material as the 1942 classic Bette Davis/Warner Bros. film. Now, Voyager was presented in the 2003 ASCAP/Disney Musical Theatre Workshop in Los Angeles.
Kevin’s non-profit organization Broadway on Sunset produced two West Coast Musical Theatre Conferences - a two-day forum where creators and veterans of Broadway musicals were interviewed along with excerpts from new American musicals. The 2000 Conference featured keynote speaker Julie Taymor (The Lion King); LA theatre visionary Gordon Davidson; CNN’s Larry King; and director Rob Marshall (Chicago). Broadway on Sunset produced over 100 interviews, symposia, and readings of new musicals; and received an award from Mayor Richard Riordan for Artistic Excellence at the 2000 Conference.
Kevin has taught "Theatre Production" at the Songwriters Guild of America, and most recently at the Academy for New Musical Theatre, both in Los Angeles. He’s co-authored the Songwriter's Market Guide to Song & Demo Submission Formats chapter on "Play Producers and Publishers" published by Writer's Digest Books; served three times as a CableAce Judge; and was profiled in the Los Angeles Times Calendar, January 1993.
Kaufman studied arranging and composition at the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles; holds a B.A. in music from the City College of New York; and is a member of ASCAP.
